Is the Glymur Waterfall hike worth it?

The Glymur Waterfall hike was by far one of my favorites to take part of during my time in Iceland. The combination of the scenic greenery views, the flowing river, and of course the second highest waterfall in all of Iceland made for one incredible experience. The great thing about Glymur is that it is an easy day trip from Reykjavik.

How to get to Glymur waterfall in Iceland?

Glymur Waterfall is Iceland’s second tallest waterfall. You can only get to it by hiking, but what a beautiful hike it is. This hike features a short walk through a cave, two river crossings, and many amazing views of the waterfall.

What does Glymur look like?

The Botnsá river also carves out a deep canyon filled with vivid green moss and nesting birds on the cliff-sides. With the jagged rocks, lush greenery, and creatures flying in the canyon, Glymur is often described looking like a scene from Jurassic Park. Like much of Iceland’s history, Glymur is tied into folklore and legend.

How to get to Glymur & Hvalvatn?

It swam up Glymur and into Hvalvatn (“Whale lake”), where it died. As I mentioned, Glymur can only be reached with a hike, but a beautiful hike. The round trip is about 7.5km (4.7 miles) and is almost completely uphill on the way there. You’ll be walking along the winding, inclining path without any tree cover.
